Bookbndr turns marked Word index entries into an alphabetical index, with subentries, print page references and linked ebook entries. Vellum’s official import and element guides do not document an equivalent automatic Word-index workflow.[2][7]
Open the browser workspace on the computer you already own. Vellum is a native Mac application; using it from Windows requires access to a Mac, such as a remote service.[1][5]
Keep your manuscript and editorial feedback in your original document. Replace the .docx to update the book while keeping your design settings. Vellum also offers reimport; Bookbndr makes this document-first workflow central.

For an index, mark the terms you want in Word first. Bookbndr builds from those entries; it does not choose index terms for you or turn a plain typed list into a live index. Recheck the generated index after changing the manuscript or layout.
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways to see both products. Formatting and previews are free; a lifetime license unlocks exports.
A proofreader spots a typo. Your editor rewrites a paragraph. You add a chapter after seeing the first proof. Those changes are easier to track when everyone agrees where the authoritative manuscript lives.
Bookbndr’s workflow is built around that decision: revise your original document, save or export the latest .docx, and replace the file in your Bookbndr project. Your design settings are separate from the manuscript text. You still check the result—especially if headings, chapter order or page counts have changed.
This is a source-document workflow, not a live connection to Word or Google Docs. Bookbndr does not automatically watch or update your original file.
Vellum can support a Word-master workflow too. Its documented reimport command replaces imported content while keeping front and back matter you added in Vellum. It would be unfair to say that every revision requires rebuilding the whole book.[2]
The version-management problem arises when you edit both the original and the formatting project. An edit made only in Vellum does not, by itself, update your original Word file. If Word remains your master, keep that correction there as well. Bookbndr makes keeping the original at the centre the default workflow.
Vellum’s native Mac experience is a strength if you already use and enjoy macOS. For a Windows writer, there is no native Vellum application; Vellum says it has no plans for one. Remote-Mac services are a workaround, with another service and cost to consider.[1][5]
Bookbndr runs in the browser, so a Windows writer can try their manuscript without arranging access to a Mac. Its $199 lifetime print-and-ebook license is $50.99 below Vellum Press’s current $249.99 price. Vellum’s $199.99 ebook-only license does not include print output.[6]
